Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine

Today's Chemical:

Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine (aka, coco hydroxysulfaine).

EWG Hazard Score:

What is it:

Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine is similar to cocamidopropyl betaine. It is a synthetic detergent used also as a foam booster, thickener, and anti-static agent.

What are its risks:

Like cocamidopropyl betaine, it can be a strong skin allergen. (Source)

Steph's Opinion:

There is only ONE published study regarding the safety of this ingredient.  The MSDS sheet is also not made public. Although the database scores it as a 0, it doesn't necessarily mean that it's safe--it's just means that there is no data on the ingredient. So, while it doesn't have a history of being harmful, it also doesn't have a history of being safe.  If you have skin sensitivies, eczema, reactions, and such, I would personally suggest avoiding this ingredient.

I'm trying to make my own shampoo and conditioner and avoid these harmful chemicals as much as possible. I've tried using soap in my hair and it was such a mess, so I'm looking for a mild and biodegradible alternative to that. I see you use something called decyl polyglucose in one of your products, would coco-glucoside be similar?
& also, I'm having a hard time finding something that works good as a natural or nearly natural and safe ingrediant for detangling my hair w/o weiging it down. any and all help is so appriciated! =) I love your "chemical of the day" post, they have really helped me find answers to questions and also got me to eliminate certain possiblities from my formulations (such as grapefruit seed extract).

I used Blackmores "Hops" shampoo and conditioner once, and it was wonderful at making my hair soft and light. Oatmeal was another ingredient that did this. Epsom salts soften as well. I wonder if any of this leads you to a good product/idea. Best regards and good luck!!

I love CeraVe lotion and decided to use their facial cleansing foam which contains this ingredient, cocoamidopropyl hydroxysultaine and my face a started breaking out. I should tell you, I have very sensitive skin when it comes to acne. I was looking for some advice/alternative products to use. I've done everything from making my own to spending too much money on a product that only made my skin worse. Please help!! Thanks.
